Re: Fall 2024 meeting
From: Craig Wiley and Steve Baldwin, co-planners
Greetings everyone:
Our fall meeting this year will be a two-day event with optional overnight accommodations, and so we wanted to get the word out early.
The meeting will be on Friday and Saturday, October 11 & 12, on the outskirts of Ohio’s largest Amish area and will include two mills we haven’t seen in over 20 years and a third we’ve never before visited. Our home base for the weekend will be Wooster (Wayne County). There will be some driving involved, but it will all be on two-lane roads with no busy freeways to navigate.
We’ll begin our day Friday with an exclusive tour of the extensively restored Kister Mill near Shreve, followed by lunch at Pine Tree Barn just a couple miles up the road. We’ll drive a few miles northeast to Smithville to visit the Mischler Weaving Mill and a small Model T Ford museum. Mid-afternoon, we’ll return to Wooster to visit the Buckeye Agricultural Museum and Education Center, where we’ll see antique rural Americana, including J. M. Smucker’s original apple butter kettle! We’ll wrap up our busy day with time to relax and visit over a home-cooked meal at Des Dutch Essenhaus in Shreve.
Overnight accommodations will be at the Wooster Econo-Lodge (see the accompanying itinerary for details). Because this part of Ohio is a prime fall tourism destination, lodging places are often booked months—sometimes even years—in advance, so we’re very fortunate to have a block of affordably priced rooms available to us in a convenient location.
On Saturday morning, we’ll travel scenic secondary roads approximately 40 miles southeast to the Baltic Mill Winery. This former steam-powered flouring mill has much of its original machinery in situ, including a stationary steam engine built by the Russell Company in nearby Massillon. The owners are excited to host us as we help them celebrate 10 years in business! Lunch and chapter business meeting will be on site.
Our two-day event will officially conclude mid-afternoon, allowing you plenty of daylight to head home—or perhaps on to your next sightseeing destination! There is much to see and do in this part of Ohio.
As always, watch the mail for an announcement/reservation form from Chapter Secretary Kay Garber a few weeks before the meeting, but for now, “Save the Date.”
This will be an excellent meeting, and we hope you can join us!

Bear's Mill is one of the few operating water-powered mills in Ohio today. A rare historic landmark. The Mill is located on the eastern outskirts of Greenville, Ohio, along a peaceful stretch of creek-side woodlands.
Built in 1849 by Gabriel Bear, Bear's Mill's grand framework is constructed of exquisite hand-hewn timber beams that are nearly 50 feet long - without a single splice. Standing four stories high, grain is carried from floor to floor throughout the inner workings of the Mill by the power of the water that runs through the mill race below. _ from the mill website.

Summer 2023 Meeting
Messer - Mayer Mill, Richfield WI
In 1869, Andrew Messer and his new bride Louisa, purchased 27 acres of land from his parents that he had grown up on, which contained a millpond, dam, raceway, and sawmill. On this property, he proceeded to build a three-story gristmill, now known as the Messer Mayer Mill.
Four years later, in 1873, the mill was up and running, producing ground flour from wheat grown by the surrounding farmers. Andrews' untimely death involving a horse caused the sale of the property to an uncle, John George Mayer, in August 1876. John and his family operated the grist and saw mill for three generations until 1954 saw the last of mechanical operations in the mill. The mill still contains the two sets of original French burr stones, conveyor, and bolter. Also are displayed four double roller mills, bolters, plansifter, elevators, and conveyors. All added equipment, at the time, was state of the art! All as it was installed years ago, and hopefully ready to be operational soon. |

Fall 2019 Meeting
The fall chapter meeting was held at Rock Mill. The mill was grinding corn during the visit, which has been recently restored to operational condition. The mill contains several very interesting models to show how the components function. The mill is continuing to be restored and the members were able to visit all five floors of the mill.
The luncheon and chapter meeting were held on the covered bridge which crosses the water source for the mill. In addition the mill provided a nice gift bag. About Rock Mill:
Rock Mill is in central Ohio south of Columbus near the community of Lancaster. The mill is located on the Hocking River. The mill structure has a large overshot waterwheel. Near the mill is a small white covered bridge. The waterwheel sits in a gorge cut by the river and has a dam located upstream from the mill. The mill structure is believed to have been built around 1824. It was probably only slightly used after the 1900s.[1] The Hocking River begins just a few miles above the mill, the waterfall is best seen from the floor of the gorge and is a very pretty feature. Access to the gorge is available but great care should be taken. The mill is owned by the county parks system and is in the process of being restored. One of the most recent additions to the mill was a new 24-foot waterwheel. The mill was visited as part of the 2016 annual SPOOM conference. The mill is very picturesque and there are lots of locations that can be used for interesting pictures. The photographer will need to have a wide-angle lens to get all the features of the mill in a single image which is best accomplished from the gorge. The trees around the mill have wonderful colors in the fall. [1] Taken in part from an unpublished handout by Bruce E. Babcock, September 23, 2012. |
Spring 2018 Meeting

Fall 2018 Meeting
Scott's Mill, Scotts, MI
While the day was rainy in the small community of Scotts, Michigan a good turn was held for the fall meeting. The group had a chance to complete explore this old mill, which had three different power sources, an overshot waterwheel, a turbine and a gasoline engine (no longer at the mill). While the mill is not operational there is a fair amount of equipment in the structure which appears to be very sound. A short business meeting was held at a local restaurant which had outstanding food.
